Children learn the importance of a healthy lifestyle

Positive affirmations teach children to love, care and respect themselves and their physical health. Each session includes dance and movement games, to help children keep fit and healthy in a fun way.

How can the Relax Kids program help schools support pupil mental health?

As the Education Department suggests, mental health problems can be related to an unmet mental health need.

The Relax Kids program can help address these unmet needs and help children feel safe, secure and supported.

As well as working directly with pupils to increase resilience, Relax Kids supports staff and parents to help improve and manage behaviour and provides simple yet effective mindfulness strategies to promote positive mental health.

Relax Kids helps schools incorporate relaxation as part of their pastoral care and PSHE curriculum.

“I believe that happiness should be taught to children of all ages. Relax Kids does just that! Relax Kids makes an important contribution to the happiness and wellbeing of our next generation.”

Dr David R Hamilton, medical scientist and Hay House author

Sessions can be used within or to supplement parts of the National Curriculum.

The programme can complement the following compulsory and non-compulsory parts of the School Curriculum :

  • PSHE

  • Speaking & Listening and Drama

  • PE

  • SEN

  • SEAL

  • Healthy Schools

The key benefits of Relax Kids to learning include:

Behavior

Self-Esteem

 Anxiety

Concentration

Behavior

  • improve behaviour

  • reduce bullying

  • reduce lunchtime incidents

  • reduce exclusions

  • improve attendance

Our exercises give children the tools to respond positively and constructively to negative emotions or situations that may have previously led to an outburst.

Relax Kids uses simple breathing techniques, progressive muscle relaxation and calming visualisations to help children manage their emotions and regulate their behaviour.

We show you in a simple and easy way how to slow down their breathing, release tension in their muscles, and use positive affirmations to help them manage future anger outbursts.

“Afternoons and dinnertimes appeared to be a problem. Children would come in hot and often angry over incidents that happened over lunchtime. It didn’t seem to matter whether the incident had been dealt with or not. As a trial, I introduced Relax Kids -the children seem calmer immediately.”

Kathy, Primary School Teacher

Self-Esteem

  • improve self-esteem

  • create a positive learning environment

  • improve behaviour

  • reduce bullying

Children with low self-esteem are often too shy to put forward their own ideas or participate in group discussions, which can prevent them from developing socially and academically.

Bullying and misbehaviour can also occur as a result of poor self-image. Children who feel that they are not ‘good’ or ‘clever’, will behave accordingly. Some children with low self-esteem may attack other’s self-image to try and make themselves feel superior.

When children believe in themselves and their abilities, they will work harder and achieve better, without fear of failure or self-doubt holding them back. They will also be kinder to themselves and each other.

The affirmation exercises help children recognise their positive qualities and learn to focus on and develop their strengths.

“My class love the self-esteem exercises. They particularly enjoy the affirmations. I have noticed that the children are more confident and happy as a result  of these techniques.”

Marie, Teacher

Anxiety

  • reduce stress and anxiety

  • improve confidence

  • increase participation

  • improve attendance

  • improve attainment

Whether children are anxious about making friends, worried about their academic performance or extra-curricular activities, or afraid to put their hand up in a lesson, anxiety can make children feel miserable, run-down, and hold them back from achieving their full- potential.

Stress hormones suppress the immune system, which can lead children to feel run-down and increase recovery time. Studies have shown that just 10 minutes a day of relaxation techniques can reduce stress, and significantly lower children’s blood pressure and heart rate.

Breathing techniques, progressive muscle relaxation and calming visualisations have all been proven to reduce stress and anxiety levels, and alleviate tension headaches in children. Children will learn simple techniques to help slow down their breathing, release the tension in their muscles, calm down and let go of their anxieties, so they feel totally relaxed and ready to learn.

“We use Relax Kids every morning as soon as the children are settled. I have been really pleased with the way the children have responded. In fact, they asked me to do an exercise before we did a practice SATs paper last week! I’d recommend Relax Kids, and will be using it from Sept with my new Y6 class”

Lousie, Teacher

Concentration

  • improve attention span

  • reduce disruptive behaviour

  • improve class participation

  • improve results

Relaxation training has been shown to be the most effective treatment for externalising behavioural disorders, including ADHD, as well as ADD and concentration problems.

Most children have a million things running through their head at any given time, so the skill and ability to stop and focus on one thing has to be learned.

Children’s concentration is also affected by their environment. When one pupil in a class is acting up or misbehaving, as well as distracting the other children, it may cause the other children feel unsettled or become anxious.

The simple techniques the children learn in a Relax Kids session help them calm down, clear their minds, let go of stress, and focus; including progressive muscle relaxation, visual imagery, positive affirmations or breathing techniques.

These techniques can all be easily incorporated into the classroom, either at the beginning of the lesson, or as a short breather exercise if children are getting too worked up.
